Women Get Fucked
Alogon Gallery, Chicago
Feb. 28 - Mar. 22, 2009
Curated by Annie Purpura and Natalie Labriola

Women Get Fucked is an exhibition that looks critically, ambivalently, and hopefully at the history of female art, while carving out a space for dialogue around contemporary female artists. This exhibition takes its title from the understanding that "women get fucked" is a notion which is deeply embedded not only in culture but language itself. The artists presented seek to reconsider the system of symbols that typically define and confine representations of femininity. Is it possible to avoid the subject of the feminine while making work as a woman? The artists in this exhibition challenge this idea by not clinging to any theories which claim to find a unifying gender identity. Rather than trying to eradicate or deny the notion of femininity, the artists in this exhibition look to the topic by stripping away common and stereotypical signifiers. Leaving behind feminine essentialisms, they find power in discreet, strange, and unexpected places.
