The Data Disc as a model and format is now obsolete. We are eager to move on to the next format without contending with the previous wreckage. It's not just the shards of holographic reflections and sprays of glimmering dust that sink into the soil and disintegrate into nonexistence, it is the physical understanding and consumption of media that built up massive industries around it moving into the past. As equipment continually defines what experiences we have with creative media, it also defines how we value its performance. There is a divide between the daily engines of technological consumption and the piles of ewaste (usually exported to hidden locations) it produces. Seeing demolished discs in the landscape causes a moment of shock, as the format now becomes an icon for an immediately bygone era.
