First Capture (2009)
Nearly identical user videos of the same site are collected and arranged together to create a single unending perspective. In GRAND VIEW 1,
we see seven humbly panning videos of similar (if not the same) overlooks at the Grand Canyon. These are stops along the sightseeing route where visitors all use their
cameras at the same time to capture the same phenomenon, to "see the sights". The differences between these clips—camera models and settings, dates,
nationalities and languages, distances travelled, upload locations, etc.—come together to form a flattened horizon that oscillates in and out
of alignment as each descriptive pan loops continuously. In the moments of alignment these views form a new landscaped moment: that of the archive's
multiplied (genrefied) experience. In many cases the filters of the prosumer cameras and the compression from multiple format translations or from uploading
to the web create an additional
layer of haze, a filter that adds an extra layer of distance. As new user videos are added, the landscape continues to expand.
